If a big-star movie hits a streaming platform without any fanfare or big announcement, most of the time you might think the movie underperformed at the box office.
so it is with Shamsherathe Hindi film starring Ranbir Kapoor, as well as Sanjay Dutt as the main antagonist and Vaani Kapoor as the female protagonist.
The period film directed by Karan Malhotra has been streaming on Amazon Prime Video since last night (August 18) and is available in Tamil and Telugu in addition to its original Hindi version. The story of the film, which takes place in the early 1800s, revolves around a Dacoit tribe fighting for independence from the British.

Shamshera it was a long overdue film as the pandemic ended its release schedules. Originally planned to hit theaters in late 2019 and then moved to June 2021 and March 2022, the film finally hit theaters on July 22, 2022. Technically, it’s still playing in theaters. The fact that it started airing even before the first month limit was crossed speaks to its box office performance.
The film also ran into some problems after its release, as writer Bikranjeet Singh Bhullar gave YRF (Yash Raj Films) and others related to the film a disclaimer of copying their story. There was a question mark about its OTT launch. Apparently this legal hurdle was a hurdle, otherwise the movie could not have made it to the streamer.
Shamshera, a big-budget film from producer Yash Raj Chopra, received neither critical acclaim nor word of mouth. Ranbir Kapoor’s double act did not save the film. One of his problems was the fact that the story outline is about a brave hero facing the evil men of the British raj who arrived shortly after RRR, who also had a tale that had a similar outline. But for a film to match the grandeur and extravagance of RRR it is an almost impossible task.
In addition, there is also a part in Shamsherawhich has parallels with another recent pan-Indian blockbuster KGF 2. (A large part of the fighting tribe is enslaved in chains. Treated worse than animals, they are imprisoned in a fort in the fictional Kaza. This dates back to KGF 2.) Again, it’s a high bar to pass.
Shamshera It fell short compared to those movies, unfortunately. Who knows, if the movie had arrived earlier than planned, it might not have gone down badly. Also, it may have come to the OTT platform with more noise and excitement.
